Holy God, we praise Thy Name
God of all, we bow before thee.
All on earth your scepter claim;
all in Heaven above adore thee.
Infinite thy vast domain,
everlasting is thy reign.
I didn’t grow up in church, and I can count on one hand how many times I’ve opened/sang from a hymnal (most instances involving someone’s funeral in an old baptist church). The God of songs I didn’t know sung in lyrics I could hardly pronounce and/or keep up with made a young girl feel disconnected, isolated, and alone. Hardback in hands, I vividly remember the picture of an aloof and absent God — one with little concern for the likes of me. Flash forward a few years, and my musical induction to faith was more along the lines of electric guitars, bass that rattled my chest, and lyrics sung from a screen. Perhaps you can relate? Or, perhaps you can’t? Perhaps hymnals were what awakened your soul to the God of the universe. Either way, how beautiful the picture of a church body where each of us comes to the table with a different formative experience.
When first outlining our 2022 study of God’s character, I went down the list of His attributes that spoke the loudest. You know, those attributes I could most easily recite … the ones that have made the greatest difference in my walk with Him. Among such attributes belongs the unequivocal truth that God is holy, right? Would you agree that He is the Most Holy God? Great. Add it to the list, but we’ve got five other months to cover so keep it moving.
Well, it’s July now. So far this year, we’ve studied God as visionary, love, sovereign, omniscient, and fatherly. Guess what attribute is next on the list?
God is Holy.
My planning process for all new content, episodes, and/or teaching always starts with the same question: how would you define this to someone who doesn’t know? How do you define God’s holiness? What does it even mean? Is it possible to contain such an attribute in one lesson? One conversation? One lifetime, even? Cue the overwhelm!
This month, our verse each day will focus on an aspect of God’s holiness (click the image above to download a pdf of our DAG). On the podcast, we’ll be defining what exactly holiness even means while mining for parallels that click and language that sticks. Join the conversation on social media as we pause for a tiny glimpse of God’s holiness through the pages of scripture. Click the image below to download this month’s scripture graphic.
In these final days, the world wants us to forget that our God is set apart. That we are set apart in Him. May we remember that the God we love and serve is holy. He isn’t finished with us, nor is He finished with those He loves … those who have yet to put their faith, hope, and trust in His Son.
Until the work is done.
